Introduction

INTRODUCTION

Helsingborgsrummet is a venue located in the Prismahuset building in the Oceanhamnen area where residents and visitors can learn about the future plans for urban development in Helsingborg. As part of the exhibition, this project uses AR technology to allow users to experience and interact with the city by touching the screen. Co-designing the city with its citizens has always been one of Helsingborg's aims, and the Helsingborgsrummet is an opportunity to create a dialogue about city building.

Helsingborg, the second-largest city in southern Sweden, was selected as a finalist for the 2020 European Capital of Innovation Awards. As one of the most innovative cities in Europe, Helsingborg is committed to being a smart, sustainable, and innovative city.

Project Goal

PROJECT GOAL

This project is part of the testing of AR technology. Its main objective is to provide visitors with a virtual platform where they can interact with the city of Helsingborg and explore it in a unique and exciting way.

Building upon the success of the previous project Pladdra, our team is excited to continue utilizing AR to create immersive and interactive experiences that inspire creativity and community engagement.

The project has already undergone initial testing during the H22 City Expo* and garnered positive feedback, it was also reported by the SVT news^ in Sweden.

*H22 City Expo is a 35-day innovation fest – an international arena to showcase, test, and co-create smart solutions that improve life in more sustainable cities. H22 has more than 500 programme features including exhibitions, entertainment, food, lectures, conferences, innovations, culture, hackathons, and much more.

Working process

WORKING PROCESS

As a UX/UI designer on a team of five, I am accountable for prototyping, conducting user testing, and managing all aspects of UI and 3D modelling. Our team adopts an agile approach, frequently collaborating and brainstorming solutions for our projects.

APRIL 2022

In the beginning, we were uncertain about how we could incorporate AR technology into the project. Therefore, we dedicated some time to brainstorming and exploring the possibilities and limitations. However, since "våga att testa!" (dare to try!) is one of our core values, we utilised our imaginations and creativity to come up with a solution. Eventually, we decided that the project could be presented in the entrance hall using AR technology.

Prioritising
our targets

APRIL 2022

Once we determined the scope of the project, we recognised that it would be a substantial undertaking. Therefore, we made the decision to prioritise the playgrounds located throughout the city and focus our efforts there initially.

Here is the list of our selected places:
- Medeltidslekan
- Prinsessor & Drakar Lekplats
- Surflekan
- Polislekan
- Dockanparken - Djungellekan
- Dinosaurielekplatsen

MAY - JUNE 2022

As part of my role, I was responsible for the UI and visual aspects of the project. To bring the playgrounds to life, I utilized Blender, a 3D modelling software. Additionally, I utilized a 3D scanning application called Polycam to assist with the 3D modelling process.

MAY - JUNE 2022

Since we have figured out what to achieve, we were up on the way of drafting, conducting tests, modifying and testing again...
As the map would be quite big in size, we printed out a sample map for testing out the feeling of having a map on the ground.

We keep testing different solutions and get prepared for the public user test.

We keep testing before our public user test.

We were trying to test the size and height of the 3D objects.

user test
JULY 2022

As part of H22, we conducted our first public user test, which involved random visitors to the Helsingborgsrummet, including individuals of varying ages and backgrounds, such as children, adults, and seniors. We provided instructions to some participants and asked them to try out the demo, while for others, we simply observed their behaviour with the function.
